When you hear people talking about custom length Christmas lights, it is easy to confuse one term with the other. Most Christmas lights bought online or in the store are usually 25 feet long. Houses used to be smaller and similarly built. Over the decades that has changed, but the length of lights and cord has not.

Although you might see directions for creating your own modified design, you might be better off to find a merchant who carries the length you need or can order them for you. Unless you know what you are doing, electrical wiring is safer when done by professionals.

There are some basic safety rules to follow with custom length Christmas lights or any set, in fact. Bring them in at the end of the holiday season to avoid weathering on the connections and the cords.

Before doing your christmas lighting installation again, check for problems such as cracks and worn insulation. Mark problems with colored electrical tape to locate them for repair, before placing them along rooftops, trees and rain gutters.

Never overload the circuit, as it is a fire danger. Unplug cords and fix bare wires immediately. Safe practices make for happy holidays.
